La muerte del periodista Manuel Castro Ramos en mayo de 1875 sintetiza la complejidad social, cultural y política que había en el puerto de Iquique durante la década previa a la Guerra del Pacífico (1879-1883) y se establece como recuerdo icónico de la memoria local sobre este periodo. Este suceso escaló a las esferas diplomáticas de ambos países y, posteriormente, quedó registrado en la literatura como un conflicto de carácter nacionalista. Sin embargo, desde un análisis historiográfico de fuentes primarias y secundarias ha sido posible develar otros antecedentes del “caso Castro Ramos”, demostrando que estaba más relacionado con la política interna del Perú durante el gobierno de Manuel Pardo, especialmente con la resistencia tarapaqueña a sus políticas sobre la industria del salitre.
