El artículo explora la relación entre las transformaciones de la ciudad de Santiago, las arquitecturas ausentes y la promoción de un régimen de memoria y ficciones visuales. Las observaciones se sitúan en los procesos de producción de una dialéctica patrimonial localizada entre “restos y hallazgos”, problematizando en torno a la ausencia de las arquitecturas más importantes del siglo XVI y las posibilidades para debatir sobre la producción de “escombros y ciudades imaginadas”. Se propone una metodología de arqueología industrial, etnografía de archivo y el testimonio documental. Estos enfoques permiten dialogar sobre el sentido de habitabilidad que subyace en el desarrollo tecnológico-moderno.
