Si el triunfo de Salvador Allende en 1970 fue un acontecimiento político internacional, el golpe de Estado de 1973 no fue indiferente para nadie en América Latina y el resto del mundo, especialmente para las izquierdas del continente. En ese contexto, las organizaciones de la nueva izquierda argentina, como el Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores y Montoneros, y de la izquierda uruguaya, vinculada al Frente Amplio, manifestaron no solo su condena ante el golpe militar en Chile, sino también, este hecho dio cuenta de las diferencias existentes entre las organizaciones de la nueva izquierda argentina y de la izquierda uruguaya con respecto al gobierno de Salvador Allende.
