El presente artículo examina tres escenas conceptuales acerca de “lo popular” en ciencias sociales desarrolladas en Chile: la teoría de la “marginalidad urbana”, el planteamiento “histórico estructural” y la propuesta conceptual de las “individualidades populares”. Se exploran las concepciones de individuo y sociedad que subyacen a cada enfoque, así como las preocupaciones sociopolíticas que las motivan. El análisis de conjunto revela que el significado de “lo popular” varía en función de las claves teóricas y las preocupaciones contextuales de cada propuesta, lo que subraya la necesidad de reconocer estas diferencias para comprender la especificidad que cada una de las miradas comporta, y los desafíos a los que atienden.
