Sumario:This article focuses on the mixed response of publishers to wholesalers' lead on book club deals in Great Britain. Some large publishers said that they would be happy to disclose simultaneous deals with book clubs to wholesalers when selling in, but smaller companies were more cautious. Bertrams Ltd. said it would contractually require publishers to disclose details of any special discount deals when selling in a new title. Special sales to book clubs and direct sales outlets are often managed by publishers' rights departments, not sales. One small publisher said it would co-operate, but monitor the wholesalers' buying patterns. One large independent publisher said it supported the wholesalers' stand.
