Description
Summary:This article provides a comprehensive overview of select research skill and leadership building opportunities and research infrastructure systems that contribute to research leaders' from traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic populations and communities (i.e., African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, and Asians) in the field of disability, health, independent living, and rehabilitation career development and success. After a short presentation of the Social Change Model of Leadership (SCML) and issues relative to the current insufficient supply of such research leaders, the article shifts focus to a detailed synthesis of the available peer review and grey literature and policy on research career development and success factors. Critical contemporary issues affecting these target groups are discussed. Recommendations for advancing the current state-of-the-science for improving the research and leadership skills and career development outcomes for investigators from these populations, especially those with disabilities, are presented.
