The pre sent study was de sig ned to com pa re the le vel of sa li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ad - re no cor ti cot ro pic hor mo ne (ACTH) and uri nary fre e cor ti sol (UFC) le vels in pa ti ents with subc li - ni cal and overt thyro to xi co sis and hypoth yro i dism. Ma te ri al and Met hods: We analy zed the sa li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ACTH and UFC le vels in 123 pa ti ents with thyro id dysfunc ti on. The pa ti ents we re clas si fi ed in to fo ur gro ups; overt thyro to xi co sis (n= 32), subc li ni cal thyro to xi co - sis (n= 29), overt hypoth yro i dism (n= 28) and subc li ni cal hypoth yro i dism (n= 34). Re sults: The re we - re no sig ni fi cant dif fe ren ces in terms of sa li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ACTH and UFC le vels in pa ti ents with subc li ni cal and overt thyro to xi co sis (p> 0.05). Si mi larly, no sig ni fi cant dif - fe ren ces co uld be de tec ted in terms of sa li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ACTH and UFC le - vels in pa ti ents with subc li ni cal and overt hypoth yro i dism (p> 0.05). The com pa ri son of pa ti ents with hypoth yro i dism and thyro to xi co sis al so did not yi eld any sig ni fi cant dif fe ren ce in terms of sa - li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ACTH and UFC le vels (p> 0.05). Conc lu si on: Si mi lar sa li vary cor ti sol, se rum cor ti sol, plas ma ACTH and UFC le vels we re de tec ted in pa ti ents with hypoth yro i - dism and thyro to xi co sis. Thus, we may sug gest that thyro id hor mo ne sta tus do es not play a ro le in the HPA axis. The ma jor li mi ta ti on of this study was the ab sen ce of a he althy con trol gro up.
