Effects of Thymus sipyleus and Taurine on Hepatic MDA, GSH, AOPP Levels and SOD Activity in Ehrlich Acide Solid Tumor Model Generated Mice.

Objective: In this study, effects of taurine (200 mg/kg/day) and Thymus sipyleus Boiss. subspecies sipyleus variety sipyleus (thyme) methanol extract (1.5 g/kg/day) administration on advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase...

Sumario:Objective: In this study, effects of taurine (200 mg/kg/day) and Thymus sipyleus Boiss. subspecies sipyleus variety sipyleus (thyme) methanol extract (1.5 g/kg/day) administration on advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in liver tissue of Swiss albino mice were investigated. Material and Methods: Test subjects were divided into six groups as healthy control, tumor control, thyme protection, thyme treatment, taurine protection and taurine treatment (n= 6). Substance was given to protection groups for 17 days beginning from the first day following tumor injection. Substance was given to treatment groups for seven days beginning from eleventh day following tumor injection. Results: When tumor control and taurine treatment groups were compared, AOPP level of taurine treatment group was found to decrease significantly (p< 0.05). When tumor control and healthy control groups were compared, AOPP level of tumor control group was seen to increase, however this increase was not found to be significant (p> 0.05). When tumor control and taurine protection groups were compared, MDA level of taurine protection group was found to decrease significantly (p< 0.05). When tumor control and taurine protection groups were compared , GSH level of taurine protection group was found to increase, however this increase was not found significant (p> 0.05). When tumor control and thyme treatment groups were compared, SOD activity of thyme treatment group was found to increase significantly (p< 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, while taurine administration decreased MDA and AOPP levels that increased with oxidative stress, it did not significantly affect GSH levels and SOD activity. While thymus sipyleus methanol extract increased SOD activity, it did not affect MDA, AOPP and GSH levels significantly.
