Sumario:Introduction: Enterobacteriaceae accounts for approximately 80% of clinically significant isolates of Gram-negative bacteria. A relatively simple, rapid method but highly specific is the method of choice for routine identification of Enterobacteriaceae. An accurate result of bacterial identification is crucial to aid in patient's treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the correct identification of Enterobacteriaceae up to the genus and species level between conventional biochemical tests (CBT) and Enterotube II (ET II). Analytical Profile Index 20E (API 20E) was used as the gold standard test. Methodology: This is a cross sectional descriptive study. A total of 204 isolates were collected from various clinical specimens from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) during twelve-month study period from January 2005 to December 2005. All isolates were identified by CBT, ET H and API 20E. Results: The correct identification rate of Enterobacteriaceae among CBT, ET [I and API 20E were 82.6%, 88.7% and 95.6% respectively. Similar results for identification up to the genus level by the three methods were 98.5%. In the analysis of biochemical panels used in API 20E, positive lysine decarboxylase (LDC) test for Escherichia co/i and positive urease test for Klebsieila pneulnoniae were significant (p < 0.05). Co,zclusion: The performance of CBT for the identification of Enferobacteriaceae up to the species level was not as good as ET II and API 20E, but the CBT comparably gave excellent identification up to the genus level.
