| Sumario: | This paper presents findings from Australian research into women's perceptions of their spiritual needs during pregnancy. Most women participating in the study described a spiritual dimension to their pregnancy which they chose to express, either through formal religion or through other forms of spiritual awareness and practices. Although spirituality was important to the participants, they did not expect health professionals to assist them to meet their spiritual needs. However, they expressed a need for health professionals to respect their spiritual beliefs. Midwives need to be aware of the diversity of spiritual belief in the community and practice midwifery in a manner that enables women to express their spiritual beliefs if that is their wish. |
