Most women participating in the study described a spiritual dimension to their pregnancy which they chose to express, either through formal religion or through other forms of spiritual awareness and practices. Although spirituality was important to the participants, they did not expect health professionals to assist them to meet their spiritual needs. However, they expressed a need for health professionals to respect their spiritual beliefs.
