The study confirms some long-held assumptions and has generated additional insights into the relationship between publication and tenure. Overall, respondents expressed a belief that peers should critically review all scholarly writing and that generally this peer-reviewed work should be given the greatest weight for tenure considerations. On the basis of this finding, social work educators who are beginning their careers should work toward publishing in peer reviewed or critically juried publications. Non-peer-reviewed work, unpublished reports and other such projects should have a few priorities or should be pursued later in one's career. Additionally, results show that respondents valued social work-focused scholarship more than work that focused on other topics. Findings of the research also indicated that publishing books and articles in social work outlets should be emphasized and rewarded.
