| Sumario: | A research investigation conducted by the Division of Examiners led to the delineation and documentation of the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the contemporary practice of American nurse-midwifery. The identification of the frequency and importance of each task as a component of the concept of professional competence also was determined. Three hundred and thirty-four (334) statements that describe the tasks (performance behaviors) of American nurse-midwifery and one hundred and ninety-six (196) areas of clinical knowledge were identified and evaluated in a three phase, three year study. Nurse-midwives evaluated each item for the frequency of performance in practice, and for the importance of safe (competent) performance of the behavior to patient well being. |
