Sleep disorders in children may lead to daytime sleepiness, frequent yawning as well as to mood disorders, hyperactivity, poor impulse control and lack of attention, that may result in social and learning problems. Also, they may have a negative impact on the family life. Goals. To investigate what are the more common bedtime routines in children and adolescents at home compared to those during the period of the hospitalization of the same; to understand if the bedtime routine is modified by the disease or by the length of hospitalization; to assess the impact of children's sleep on their families. Methods. The study was carried out by administering 2 questionnaires to children's parents. A visual analogue scale was used to measure the parent's perception of the impact of their children's sleep habits on their lives. Results. Personal hygiene is the most frequent bedtime routinary practice both at home and in hospital. Parents are affected by the sleep routine of their children (mean score 4.12 at home vs. 5.57 in hospital) and they consider important the practices of sleep hygiene, (78.1% at home vs 51.2% in hospital). The time of falling asleep is delayed in average by 46 minutes in children aged 7 to 11 during hospitalization. Conclusions. Nurses have an important role in assisting patients with sleep problems. A sleep hygiene education can be useful to reduce the negative impact that hospitalization may have on the sleep of children and on their quality of life as well as on that of their families.
