These findings lent a fresh perspective to different branches of biology, including those devoted to studying mechanisms of learning and memory. It has been claimed that in anything from five to twenty years, the molecular basis of memory could be unraveled, which entailed the assumption that individual and immunological memory is encoded through a mechanism similar to that of species memory, i.e. through a molecular code. Thus, a unitary hypothesis, including the three kinds of memories, was put forward.
