Mipcom Junior, the children's showcase event, also reflected greater confidence, with 15% more screenings than last year. New for 2003 was a series of conferences featuring licensing and merchandising industry executives. These underlined the importance of ancillary rights as revenue streams, particularly at a time when lower advertising revenues and an oversupply of children's product means that broadcasters are looking to pay less for programming. The relationship works best when the production company's vision mirrors that of the publisher and author, according to Ted Dewan, an award-winning children's author and illustrator.
