Sumario:Objective: This study was conducted to compare the lymphocyte subsets in gender-related epileptic patients and healthy subjects. Study Design: Comparative cross-sectional study Materials and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving a total of 190 subjects with 95 of them were epileptic and the remaining 95 subjects were healthy subjects. Peripheral blood samples were processed and analyzed to determine the lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CDI9+ and CD16+56+) via flow cytometric analysis (FACS Canto, Becton-Dickinson). Data was analyzed by Independent T-test using SPSS programme version 12.0. Results: Results demonstrated that there were significant difference between healthy and epileptic male in almost all lymphocyte subsets studied but no significant difference found in female subjects. Statistically significant differences included the increment of CD3+ (95% CI: 0.08, 0.36; p value = 0.002), CD4+ (95% CI : 0.02, 0.21; p value = 0.018), CD19+ (95% CI : 0.03, 0.14; p value = 0.002) and CD8+ (95% CI : 0.001, 0.17; p value = 0.048). Whereas, no significant difference found in CD16+56+. Conclusion: A significant increased in lymphocyte subsets counts may suggest that there were cellular immune derangements in male epileptic patients.
