Waterstone's said the implementation of its Phoenix Version 9 system would mean returns were down on early 2003. Despite the problems with W H Smith's Retek system, the company said it expected returns to be level with the previous year. Independents said that cautious buying and post-Christmas sales meant a lower level of returns. Only 18% expected higher returns to publishers, 42% said that returns were at the same level, 32% reported lower returns and 8% claimed that their returns were negligible. |
