| Sumario: | This article presents the suggestions shared by authors who began their careers by self-publishing. Many authors who began their careers by self-publishing are going on to produce national best-sellers for mainstream publishers. All would agree that they acquired hard-won wisdom in self-publishing that could benefit the many other authors who want to go mainstream or just to be successful as independent publishers. Kimberla Lawson Roby says authors must research the publishing industry and read The Self-Publishing Manual by Dan Poynter before they self-publish. Parry Brown suggests that authors must be consumed with commitment. They must sell books as if their contract depends on it, because it does. Travis Hunter adds that authors should write what is true to their heart. They must not jump on trends and get an editor before submitting their work. |
