| Sumario: | This paper examines historiographical analyses of the modernization process effected under Spanish leader Francisco Franco, which can also be seen to have paved the way for the eventual triumph of a Spanish democracy. It discusses two major lines of debate relating to the nature of the Franco regime and to the issue of Spanish backwardness/modernization. The author's goal is to expose the weakness of the fascist and authoritarian paradigms and to set out an alternative characterization of the Spanish regime as a fascistized dictatorship. The relationship between the Franco regime and Spanish society in the manner of the "Alltagsgeschichte" is studied, and Franco's various ideological/political projects are examined in order to expose the lines of continuity and change running through his dictatorship. |
