| Sumario: | The literature on learning problems was reviewed for the purpose of examining the relationship between learning problems and identity problems among boys of latency age. Learning problems can often be caused by an identity foreclosure that is, in turn, often the result of negative parental attitudes toward masculinity. The son internalizes his parents' attitudes and feels that it is dangerous to be a man; consequently, he withdraws from the learning process. The caseworker who treats the parents attempts to reverse this pathological process by changing their attitudes. After understanding their unmet needs, he attempts to meet them at the outset and to help the parents find new ways to sublimate their childhood strivings. Their new attitudes to help to free their son to achieve a sense of his own identity and make an effort to learn.
