      ab: This paper aims to analyse how the first teacher training experiences happened in the last pioneer fringe in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from the perspective of former female students and teachers. The institutions focused on are the Institute of Education Fernando Costa, from Presidente Prudente/SP, and the Institute of Education Antônio Marinho de Carvalho Filho, from Presidente Venceslau/SP. Ultimately, it was possible to verify that these institutions contributed to the development of education in the west of São Paulo and, even though they were often disseminators of representations that sought to frame feminine behaviour and how they should work, the appropriations of the normal school female students demonstrate a critical posture in regards to education.
