| Sumario: | Tremendous traumas relating to refugee situations have substantially hindered the mental and behavioral health of refugee youth. Prolonged and cumulative adversities during forced migration have led refugee populations to be exposed to a high risk of substance misuse as part of a coping mechanism. This study aims to explore the role played by substances within the lives of Somali refugee youth who are displaced in low-resource, urban settings. We conducted in-depth individual interviews with twenty Somali refugee youth who are involved in gang activities in urban Kenya. Using a thematic analysis, this study revealed how substances have been used to cope with the negative impacts of trauma and how substances operate as a strategic tool for survival within the lives of displaced Somali refugees. This study discussed the implications for breaking the cycle of substance use. |
