Prolonged and cumulative adversities during forced migration have led refugee populations to be exposed to a high risk of substance misuse as part of a coping mechanism. This study aims to explore the role played by substances within the lives of Somali refugee youth who are displaced in low-resource, urban settings. We conducted in-depth individual interviews with twenty Somali refugee youth who are involved in gang activities in urban Kenya. Using a thematic analysis, this study revealed how substances have been used to cope with the negative impacts of trauma and how substances operate as a strategic tool for survival within the lives of displaced Somali refugees.
