| Sumario: | This article intends to examine the role of the maktab-khānah in the socialisation of students in the Safavid era, using the functionalist method. The results of this research demonstrate that, due to the transition of the Safavids' ideology from Ṣufism to Shi'ism and the need for Shi'a fiqh for the management of society, the educational institutions, including the maktab-khānah, started to play a vital role in the socialisation of students and in fulfilling the needs of the government. As the first formal educational institution, the maktab-khānah transmitted new religious values and norms to its members. Students entered the maktab-khānah at an early age with minds ready to learn; as such, these institutions played a significant role in socialising them according to the Shi'a ideologies. Consequently, the maktab-khānah integrated students into society and its collective values, and by teaching what society expected of them, they would learn how to live in it.
