However, few have explored their ethical or philosophical foundations. The authors performed a scoping review utilizing the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. In addition, the authors utilized the following search terms: higher education, diversity, equity, inclusion, philosophy, and/or ethics. They screened the titles and abstracts of 1,757 articles; 64 met the initial inclusion criteria. A second, full-text screening yielded two articles for qualitative content analysis. Results indicate the scarcity of literature pertaining to using philosophical, more specifically ethical, concepts as the framework for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education. Paul Ricoeur's "small ethics" offers one example of using applied ethics to cultivate and guide institutional initiatives. Having a philosophical foundation within higher institutional initiatives posits positive changes resulting from reciprocity in the context of everyday relationships.
