The volume includes analyses of art and literature as well as history and philosophy. Through close readings and viewings, the authors re-imagine and re-position how modernity is constructed and conceptualized, with the result that modernity must be understood as modernities , and modernism as modernisms. The titular concept of after is used as "both repetition and difference, both homage and critique," which means that canonical works, such as Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway are read with both love and scepticism, and placed next to analyses of works that has previously been ignored — mostly the work of female Black or indigenous artists.
