Sumario:Thalidomide is a derivative of glutamic acid, synthesized in 1953 by Wilhem Kunz in the Chemie Grünenthal laboratories in Germany. It was used for the treatment of symptoms of pregnancy as a hypnotic, sedative and antiemetic during the first trimester of pregnancy. One year after its commercialization, approximately 3000 dysmelias were registered worldwide. Although enigmatic, thalidomide-based treatment is currently used in various dermatological diseases due to its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, and antifibrotic action; although its administration is limited by teratogenicity and the lack of uniformity in the reports of other adverse effects.
