It has been seen to strengthen scientific understanding, critical thinking and competence related to research activity. However, a concern has arisen internationally about the reduced share of philosophy of science in nursing studies. The purpose of the review was to describe the meanings that previous nursing science literature has assigned to philosophy of science studies in the context of nursing studies. The search was conducted in April 2023 with a supplementary search in May 2024. The search from CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and ERIC databases yielded 2443 references with 19 scientific articles forming the material for the analysis after meeting the eligibility criteria. As a result of the narrative analysis, three key themes were identified: academic culture, identity and education; the discipline's foundations and the justification for its existence; and the values and obligations of science. The meanings described expressed characteristics, beliefs or assumptions associated of philosophical studies in the formation and development of general academic and nursing science competence, and the strengthening of discipline specific expertise. The gained information clarifies the relevance of philosophy of science in nursing science studies and its impact in the formation of academic expertise as well as promotes the discussion about the rightful place of philosophical research in the development of disciplinary knowledge. The results can be used in the development of nursing education. Tieteenfilosofia on toiminut tieteenalasta riippumatta yliopistokoulutuksessa perustana tiedon ja totuuden etsimiselle. Sen on nähty johtavan tieteellisen ymmärryksen, kriittisen ajattelun ja tutkimustoimintaan liittyvän osaamisen vahvistumiseen. Kansainvälisesti on kuitenkin herännyt huoli hoitotieteen opintojen tieteenfilosofisen perustan heikkenemisestä. Tämän scoping-katsauksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata merkityksiä, joita tieteenfilosofisille opinnoille hoitotieteen koulutuksen yhteydessä on hoitotieteellisessä kirjallisuudessa annettu. Haku toteutettiin huhtikuussa 2023 ja täydennyshaku toukokuussa 2024 CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus ja ERIC-tieto-kantoihin, joka tuottivat yhteensä 2443 viitettä. Valintaprosessin jälkeen aineiston muodosti 19 julkaisua. Narratiivisen analyysin tuloksena tunnistettiin kolme keskeistä teemaa: akateeminen kulttuuri, identiteetti ja koulutus, tieteenalan perusteet ja olemassaolon oikeutus sekä erityistieteen arvot ja velvollisuudet. Kuvatut merkitykset ilmaisivat tieteenfilosofisiin opintoihin liitettyjä ominaisuuksia, uskomuksia tai oletuksia tieteellisen osaamisen muodostumisessa, akateemisten ja hoitotieteellisten geneeristen taitojen kehittymisessä sekä tieteenalakohtaisen asiantuntemuksen vahvistumisessa. Katsaus kartoittaa tieteenfilosofian merkitystä osana hoitotieteen koulutusta ja akateemisen asiantuntijuuden muodostumista sekä edistää keskustelua filosofisen tutkimuksen oikeutetusta paikasta tieteenalan tiedon kehittämisessä.
