The fifteenth-century books of hours represent one of the most intricate spaces of interaction between image, text, and contemplation. This article examines vegetal symbolism in the margins of four illuminated codices associated with figures linked to royalty. It focuses on plant species such as the lily, rose, pomegranate, strawberry, and thistle, which together form a silent visual theology connected to the devotio moderna and an embodied affective spirituality. Through a comparative iconographic analysis grounded in patristic theological sources, the study proposes an interpretation of the margin as an active symbolic space. It reveals how books of hours offered not only prayer but also a visual and meditative itinerary, in which illuminated vegetation functioned as a devotional, pedagogical, and political language.
