The essay compares this Latin text with a Florentine sermon from 1424, which is preserved in two different versions (see Appendix I). Bernardino transformed the dialogue between two interlocutors with evocative names - Dindimo, king of the Brahmins, and Indalesio, bishop of Urci (Almeria) - into an exchange between the preacher and an imaginary character with the allusive name, Gioioso (Joyful). The result is a profound and original change of style in the vernacular texts, which confirm Bernardino's theatrical inclination and his talents as an inventive manipulator of language. The Appendix illustrates his skill in inventing "nomi parlanti" (speaking names). In un codice autografo della Biblioteca Universitaria di Budapest (MS lat lat. 102), che contiene schemi e materiali utili alla predicazione, Bernardino da Siena trascrive un passo del Dialogus de mundi vanitate di Ugo da San Vittore, dove si rappresenta l'improvvisa drammatica fine della felicità sperimentata in diverse attività e stati della vita (navigazione, commercio, ricchezza, nozze, scienza appresa nelle scuole). Il saggio mette a confronto il testo latino e una predica fiorentina del 1424 che è conservata in due diverse redazioni (vedi Appendice I). Il dialogo tra due interlocutori dal nome evocativo -Dindimo, re dei Bramani e Indalesio, vescovo di Urci (Almeria) - è trasformato in uno scambio tra il predicatore e un personaggio immaginario dal nome allusivo (Gioioso). Ne deriva il profondo e originale mutamento di stile nei testi volgari, che conferma l'inclinazione teatrale di Bernardino e le sue doti di originale manipolatore della lingua.
