However, Ungaretti was not satisfied with this poem, so much so that in 1960 he made revisions to avoid its jerky rhythm. He changed the title but was never able to find a definitive form that fully satisfied him, to the point of describing the Cantetto as «a mad poem», which he rewrote many times, as evidenced by the numerous variants. On the occasion of Bruna Bianco's 27th birthday -- his last muse -- Ungaretti gave her a handwritten copy of the Cantetto, with an illustration, in a numbered edition by Piero Dorazio (38/100), accompanied by a dedication dated April 16th, 1967. This essay aims to clarify the variants, particularly the unpublished ones that appear in the version given to Bianco. Il Cantetto senza parole è stato pubblicato per la prima volta sulla rivista «Officina», fascicolo 11 del 1957 (bimestrale di poesia diretto da Francesco Leonetti, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Roberto Roversi, pubblicato a Bologna dalle Officine Grafiche Calderini). Ungaretti però, non è soddisfatto di questa poesia, tanto che nel 1960 apporta correzioni per evitare l'excursus che rende il ritmo «sussultorio» (Ungaretti, 2009, p. 1108). Cambia il titolo, non riesce a trovare una forma definitiva che lo soddisfi pienamente, tanto da definire il Cantetto «una poesia matta», che riscrive molte volte, come testimoniano le numerose varianti. In occasione del 27° compleanno di Bruna Bianco, sua ultima musa, Ungaretti le dona una copia manoscritta del Cantetto, con disegno, in edizione numerata, di Piero Dorazio (38/100), e con dedica datata 16 aprile 1967.
