| Sumario: | The Cantetto senza parole was first published in the magazine «Officina», issue 11 of 1957 (a bi-monthly poetry journal directed by Francesco Leonetti, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Roberto Roversi, published in Bologna by Officine Grafiche Calderini). However, Ungaretti was not satisfied with this poem, so much so that in 1960 he made revisions to avoid its jerky rhythm. He changed the title but was never able to find a definitive form that fully satisfied him, to the point of describing the Cantetto as «a mad poem», which he rewrote many times, as evidenced by the numerous variants. On the occasion of Bruna Bianco's 27th birthday -- his last muse -- Ungaretti gave her a handwritten copy of the Cantetto, with an illustration, in a numbered edition by Piero Dorazio (38/100), accompanied by a dedication dated April 16th, 1967. This essay aims to clarify the variants, particularly the unpublished ones that appear in the version given to Bianco. |
