| Sumario: | The U.S. faces tremendous challenges related to the healthcare workforce including staffing shortages, burnout and mental health concerns, workplace safety and violence, adoption and implementation of new technologies, and changes related to recent cuts to government funding. These issues signal an urgent need for leaders to create supportive work environments and provide essential resources for the health, safety, and well-being of their staff. Faculty of healthcare management programs have an opportunity to prepare the next generation of leaders to enhance individual resilience and to foster an organizational culture and workplace environment that supports the mental health and well-being of healthcare workers. This manuscript presents leadership competencies and strategies to enhance resiliency and optimal well-being of the individual and to build supportive workplace environments to mitigate burnout and stress. Several frameworks are presented to advance health workforce well-being with a focus on leadership strategies at the individual and organizational level. At the individual level, strategies for building resiliency and managing stress are reviewed, which include self-awareness, reflection, growth mindset, social connections, and building healthy habits. At the organizational level, discussion centers on building physically and psychologically safe work environments, supportive organizational culture, participative management and shared governance, and enhanced use of quality management techniques, implementation science concepts, and best practices in measurement and evaluation. This manuscript describes how to build content into healthcare management educational programs for students to gain skills for their own well-being as well as to positively address burnout and other mental health concerns experienced by healthcare workers.
