Fragility fractures of the pelvis—time to address the needs of people with these 'orphan injuries'.
The article focuses on the extension of the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) in the UK to include pelvic fractures, highlighting the need for improved coordinated care for older people with these injuries. Pelvic fractures, particularly of the pubic ramus, are more common than previously recognized and carry significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs comparable to hip fractures. Current care pathways for pelvic fractures are inconsistent, often lacking multidisciplinary coordination and adequate secondary prevention, such as osteoporosis treatment and fracture liaison service (FLS) involvement. The new national audit aims to identify all pelvic fracture cases, promote integrated care involving orthogeriatrics, trauma, and medical specialties, and develop standardized management protocols to reduce the risk of further fragility fractures. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Article src: R language: English refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: N holdings: @attributes: islocal: N |
