| Sumario: | Licensing is an important part of the professionalization of social workers. The practice analysis, done by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), produces the largest dataset of knowledge needed and tasks performed by practicing social workers. Analyses of these data support ending specialization of social work graduate education based on practice method. Review of the knowledge, skills, and abilities statements for the clinical and advanced generalist exams indicates virtually no difference between them. Those practicing independently, regardless of graduate specialization and current practice method, draw on the same requisite knowledge. While the academy has historically been resistant to using regulatory information to inform curricula, results support the elimination of clinical and nonclinical specializations in graduate social work education.
