It is based on two steady-state ordinary differential equations that represent transport, decomposition, reaeration, and natural self-purification processes. From these equations, a numerical model implemented in MATLAB is developed, based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). The model integrates the classic Streeter-Phelps model as a theoretical reference for BOD and DO dynamics. Several kinetic parameters are considered in the numerical framework: K1 and K2, related to BOD purification and DO reaeration; the longitudinal dispersion coefficient D and a term W, which represents inputs and/or outputs of matter into the river, allowing the simulation of point or diffuse inputs. To calibrate these parameters, the MATLAB fmincon optimization algorithm is used, establishing bounding constraints for each parameter. Two examples are presented: a theoretical one, using Streeter-Phelps with zero dispersion; and a real one, corresponding to the modeling of a stretch of the Almendares River based on field measurements. In both cases, numerical and graphical results of the parameter calibration are shown. The results identify critical areas of pollution and allow the simulation of future scenarios, contributing to the sustainable management of water resource. Los resultados identifican áreas críticas de contaminación y p ermiten simular escenarios futuros, contribuyendo a la gestión sostenible de los recursos hídricos. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Article src: R language: Spanish refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: Y custom: Copyright of Revista CENIC Ciencias Quimicas is the property of Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites without the copyright holder's express written permission.
