| Sumario: | This article focuses on the historical development, current status, and future challenges of nursing research in Sweden. Since its formal establishment linked to the 1977 higher education reform, nursing research has evolved from a marginal practice-based activity into a recognized academic discipline grounded in theory, methodology, and evidence-based practice. Today, Swedish nursing research addresses diverse areas such as person-centred care, chronic illness, and healthcare professional working conditions, while emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and public, patient, and professional involvement (PPPI). Despite progress, challenges remain, including resource constraints, career pathway uncertainties, and the need to bridge the gap between research and clinical implementation. The article underscores the importance of maintaining nursing’s distinct epistemological identity within broader health sciences to ensure its continued contribution to equitable, sustainable, and evidence-informed healthcare.
