Sumario:The article focuses on challenges and innovations in patient recruitment for molecularly targeted oncology clinical trials, using the Breast Cancer Trials (BCT) Olaparib + ImmunOtherapy (OLIO) trial as a case study. It highlights that strict molecular eligibility criteria, such as homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) status, limit patient enrollment, prompting the removal of such criteria in OLIO due to low recruitment. To address these challenges, BCT developed a remote telehealth pre-screening process to facilitate molecular testing and patient identification across non-trial sites, aiming to broaden access and improve trial participation. Despite limited uptake among clinicians during the OLIO pilot, the approach shows potential for wider application, though barriers remain in data management and system compliance. The article calls for increased clinician engagement with telehealth pre-screening and further innovation to enhance recruitment efficiency and trial generalizability in oncology research.
