| Summary: | Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify clinical educator or facility factors that affect productivity in the supervisory setting. Method: This study was a retrospective cohort design utilizing a convenience sample of speech-language pathology clinical educators in medical settings in the United States. Participants completed a survey providing 10 weeks of personal productivity data both before and during the student rotation, personal and facility demographic data, as well as qualitative questions regarding reasons for impact on productivity and feelings of administrators. Results: Average weekly productivity did not significantly vary across time in any of the factors analyzed. Administrators were supportive of hosting students and understood that productivity would be affected, but the extent of this understanding differed from the supervising speech-language pathologists' understanding. Conclusions: The results showed that none of the factors researched here had a specific impact on productivity. This implies that the factors influencing productivity must be in different areas or from different factors. Ruling out all these factors narrows the focus to other related areas, specifically policies in teaching hospitals as well as additional training provided to the student clinician in advance of the clinical rotation.
