Sumario:This article reports that excessive discounting over Christmas only served to reduce margin for high street specialist publishers and wholesalers in Great Britain. Waterstone's Booksellers Ltd. gross margin fell by 1.2% in December 2005, reflecting its promotional led activity over Christmas. Operating profit was £0.5m for the half year, down from £0.9m the previous year. Seymour Pierce analyst Rhys Williams said that margin at Waterstone's was likely to be down by 3040 basis points for the full year. Publishers said that Waterstone's sales figures proved that heavy discounting had not generated the sales lifts required.
