| Sumario: | The article proposes considerations that will help in strengthening the professional contributions of teacher education and at the same time helping the advancement of science and the art of teaching. The author suggests that teacher education must become clearly knowledge-oriented and knowledge-based. In addition, teacher education must also be more evaluative and must assure its relevance to real teaching and learning problems. According to the author, the contemporary teachers colleges must utilize its knowledge generating capabilities to inform professional practice at all levels.
