Hierarchical task analysis is distinct from discrete task analysis: Whereas discrete task analysis is a tool used to specify how instruction is to be carried out, hierarchical analysis is a tool used to decide what to teach and when to teach it. The process of doing a hierarchical analysis is essentially one of the analysis of behavioral prerequisites to goals.
