ab: The article reports that medical publishers have been hit hard by new guidelines that prevent books being given to doctors by drug representatives. The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has ruled that representatives cannot hand out gifts with a perceived value of more than £6. The association wants to prevent inducements encouraging doctors to select one type of drug over another. The ABPI has always insisted that a representative is not allowed to present a gift to a health professional if it costs the pharmaceutical company more than £6. Publishers circumvented this by selling pharmaceutical companies books discounted to £6.
