Summary:The article discusses social aspects of politics in nineteenth century Spanish America through an examination of New Granada, now known as Colombia, between 1825 and 1850. Previous historical examination of nineteenth century Spanish America focuses on class antagonisms between landowners and the newly emerging bourgeoisie, with many interpretations describing a landowning aristocracy that dominates the country's citizens. The article examines the social aspects of elite political commitments in Colombia as the country's two traditional parties took form.
