Summary:The article reports on the upgrades applied by graphics-engine vendors on their physics processing to improve computer gaming. Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the market research firm Enderle Group, explains the need to provide higher performance and more realistic effects in computer gaming. The development of a stand-alone physics processing unit (PPU) by Ageia and the new physics engines used by ATI and Nvidia on their chips are discussed. ATI and Nvidia are the market leaders of graphics-processing units (GPUs), which are essential in rendering images and in graphics processing.
