Sumario:The work of the editor had been described as a ‘work of a gentleman’. Nowadays, they often refer to it as ‘work of a manager’. Worldwide, the changes and developments in the book publishing industry are significant. Greece is representative of the small publishing markets, which have until today maintained some of the traditional features, and at the same time are deeply influenced by the changes. The Greek publishing market is small, with a reading audience of about 15 million people, which tends to enlarge. The book production increases. It is significant that almost all the Greek publishing houses are family companies. Small and independent publishers hold a good amount of the book production. On the other hand, some publishers, in their effort to be the market leaders, have managed to introduce ‘new methods’ of promotion and to change the picture of the Greek publishing industry. Initially, the paper provides a historical overview, and then focuses on the features of the Greek publishing industry, as they are developing nowadays. In that framework, considering the tradition and the changes, the paper attempts to give a portrait of the Greek publishers, who try to combine tradition with contemporary characteristics. Representative publishers will be used as case-studies. Thus, a framework is provided for the study of the Greek publishing industry.
