| Sumario: | Because of growing interest in the visual and in new ways of constructing and accessing images, picturebooks are becoming increasingly influenced by different modes of reading. They are evolving to meet, as well as contribute to, this cultural shift. This paper examines two Australian picturebooks of the twenty first century to show how these changes are manifesting, and to explore the implications of this cultural shift. The books are examined through an aesthetic, cultural and ethical framework that draws in part from recent theories about the grammars of meaning, especially that of visual design.
