| Sumario: | The issue in the 1518-19 debates between humanist Petrus Mosellanus (Peter Schade; 1493-1524) and scholastic Jacobus Latomus (1475-1544) was how theologians arrive at knowledge about the divine. Mosellanus, following Erasmus, focused on the language of God's inscripturated Word and the knowledge and study of the original biblical languages. Latomus used Aristotelian and related categories of thought to focus on intellectual concepts prior to their expression in written and spoken language. Latomus's views were also an attack on Erasmus. Latomus was convinced that "the gospel in the heart" took precedence over the Bible. The Mosellanus-Latomus confrontation is a classic example of the 16th-century scholastic-humanist debate. |
