Sumario:The article discusses controls to prevent the misuse of computer systems by employees. Studies suggest a majority of computer security breaches at businesses are due to employees. The misuse of information services (IS) can cause financial losses, negative publicity, and a decrease in customer confidence. Guidelines for IS usage, biometric controls and monitoring software can prevent IS misuse. A study utilizing surveys of employees suggests that they are most aware of security policies despite their limited ability to prevent IS misuse. Respondents were less likely to misuse IS if they were aware of security programs and software.
